In recent events, Ford car company has finally tested their brand new supercar, the Ford GT. In Gary Gastelu’s article on Fox News, he writes about how Ford is going to tackle the competition on and off the race track. Gastelu uses simple, monosyllabic diction throughout the article, likely so it will appeal to a broader audience than an article with more educated, higher diction. The only pieces when the author uses diction that seems more educated is when he refers to the parts of a car, which to someone who is unfamiliar to cars may seem like gibberish. Gastelu appeals to logos all throughout his article with abundant facts and statistics about specs of the car and track times. By providing these facts, the audience gets a deeper understanding of the car and the process it goes through to get to the customer. The tone of the article is highly informational mainly because of the appeals to logos and statistics about the Ford GT. The purpose of this article is to inform the public about the Ford GT, and the process it has gone through, from the whiteboard and brainstorming to the production lines and the racetrack.

In Holly McKay’s article on FOX News, written on May 11th, 2017, she writes about the recent MOAB bombing on ISIS tunnels and bunkers in Syria. In her article, McKay uses elevated diction throughout, using words such as “decimate” and “illuminating” instead of words such as “destroy” or “point out. By choosing these more elevated words instead of their basic alternatives, it brings about a more educated perspective to the article. The tone of this article is very informational, likely due to the heavy appeal to logos with numerous facts and statistics the author provides throughout. The author likely provides these things so the audience has some background knowledge of why the bomb was dropped, and the effects it has caused. The authors purpose of the article is to inform the audience about the recent events in the Middle East and how it may affect their lives, and many others as well. http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2017/05/09/j-r-martinez-recalls-military-humvee-accident-that-left-him-badly-burned.html
This week on FOX, war veteran J.R Martinez comes forward to speak out about the IED incident in Afghanistan that left 30% of his body severely burned. Throughout his story, Martinez heavily appeals to pathos by describing his journey through 34 operations and how he struggled. Martinez stated that he often “felt like giving up” because of his “disfigurement”, but persevered to become a motivational speaker. His diction throughout his recollection is fairly simple, most likely because he is speaking to such a broad audience and because his story is not written out. The most impactful element of Martinez’s speech is his tone. Although his tone may be conversational, going along with the simplistic diction, the veteran has a very grateful tone. He states, “I'm one of the fortunate ones. So many don't come home. I know I'm one of the blessed”. Martinez’s purpose of telling his story is to make the audience realize that they are lucky to be in the position they are in, because lots of people don't get the same opportunities they have. Martinez argues this point through his appeal to pathos and by providing his first hand experience with being given a second chance at life. His argument is solid throughout, and is supported through his credibility of being one of the many who have protected our country. http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/crime/253714393-story
This week, on May 8th of 2017, two people were killed and 8 were wounded after a gang opened fire on a group attending a memorial in Chicago. In this article, the author uses a very short and to the point syntax while still appealing heavily to pathos by describing the tragedy with minimal words. One very apparent appeal to pathos is when the author states that that victims were attending “a memorial for a person who was fatally wounded in a shooting earlier that day”. Throughout the article, the author also appeals to logos by stating that “Chicago has been plagued by gang violence in recent years”, causing the “sharp rise in homicides in the area”. The authors tone in the article is very monotone, almost causing it to seem as if it were written by a robot. This is supported by the bland diction of the article, having almost no polysyllabic words anywhere. In terms of the articles purpose, it is likely to bring the issue of gang violence in Chicago to the attention of Americans. Articles like this are meant to make people aware of the issues, and hope someone somewhere will make a change. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/04/24/us-citizens-held-in-north-korea-see-diminished-hope-freedom-amid-rising-tensions.html
This week, another U.S citizen has been detained in North Korea, causing tensions to rise. To capture the audiences attention, Andrew O'Riley appeals to pathos and uses educated diction along with a grim tone to construct his article. One prime example of O'Rileys' appeal to pathos is the piece where he states that "North Korea has put another American behind bars, bringing to three the number of U.S. citizens imprisoned...". When this is read, a sense of fear and sympathy is inflicted upon the reader. Just as well, the reader may get a sense of patriotism due to the fact that a fellow American is being imprisoned inside a country that has high tension with our own. O'Rileys educated diction is another key component to his article. Throughout the article, O'Riley uses words like "gulag" and "detained" to make the article more serious. By doing this, the audience is allowed to realize the severity of the situation. Lastly, O'Riley implicates a grim tone so it weighs heavily on the audience. Pieces that he includes that provide this would be things like " Despite his pleas, the college student was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor". Another example would be " Kim was detained in North Korea on Saturday... as he was trying to leave with his wife on a flight to China". By including these pieces, the readers may realize that the people carrying out the acts are ruthless, and that we need to do something about it. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/03/02/young-man-who-walked-miles-to-work-now-drives-after-police-raise-cash.html
In Fox's article "Young man who walked miles to work now drives after police raise cash", a number of rhetorical strategies are used to connect with the audience. One of the most evident strategies used in the article is the appeal to pathos. Pieces in the article such as "he saw his life change in the span of just a few weeks, after police helped raise money to buy him a car, and send him to college" give the reader a warm feeling inside as it appeals to our sense of kindness. All throughout the article, a sense of kindness is spread, giving the entire piece a positive vibe. The syntax is structured almost like a book, where dialogue is split into different sections. The authors diction is simplistic and monosyllabic, causing the article to be a quick read. Words such as "hope" are used throughout the article, causing the audience to feel compassionate for the walking man. The authors tone in the article is a happy tone, most likely to maintain the good mood that people feel when they see the article title and choose to read it. It seems that the authors purpose of the article is to restore faith in the police due to all of the recent controversy. This article shows the reader that not all cops are bad cops, and that the community s always looking out for one another. The article connects to the audiences heart, giving it much more worth than some may give credit. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/01/27/u-s-backed-iraqi-fighters-say-trumps-refugee-ban-feels-like-betrayal.html In Hollie McKay’s article about Trumps refugee ban, she uses fairly simplistic, monosyllabic words to make the article readable to the average person. Her use of words such as “proposal” created a lighter tone towards the subject than a word such as “order”. McKay also uses interesting forms of syntax in her article. Phrases such as “Others conveyed fear given that they have been waiting in-line for resettlement for years – their lives under militia threat for their American associations – only to now be told that they may not make it out.” create a sad tone by escalating the emotional factor of the sentence. McKay’s purpose in writing the article is to inform the average American about Trumps ban on refugees, while providing the refugees perspective on the order. Her overall goal of the article is to allow the reader to get an idea of how the refugees on the other side of the argument feel about what is going on. McKay’s purpose is valuable considering the main problem behind such conflicts is understanding one another, and this article allows us to do just that. McKay organizes her article by first providing background information behind the order, then by providing quotes from various sources with opinions on the subject, and lastly providing quotes about how people feel about Trump and his past/future plans. Her article is strong, and is backed by many facts and credible sources. |
